‘Mediocre’ settlement
Shop assistants whose wages and work conditions are governed by the retail (non-food) award will get a wage increase of between 9.85 per cent and 11.4 per cent from December, after the settlement of. the award in conciliation in Christchurch yesterday. The advocate for the employees. Mr R. J. Campbell, said the settlement was “very mediocre," with some progress in better recognition of the higher grades. Under the award, a grade three shop assistant will from December receive about $216 gross a week. Mr Campbell said that it was mainly grade three workers who would receive the 11.4 per cent wage rise.
The employers' advocate. Mr C. D. Mclnnes, said that about 85 per cent of the , employees covered by the award would get the 9.85 per cent increase. He said the grade three increase was agreed to because of a commitment by the employers to restore relativity with a grade of clerical workers. The Shop Employees’ Union had sought increases in youth rates, but Mr Campbell said the only advance achieved in face of "very strong reaction” from the employers was a lowering of the age when adult rates started, from 21 vears to 20>/ 2 . Conciliation talks will resume today on the grocery and supermarket award.
