New threat in Caltex dispute

Oil-industry employers have threatened to boycott award conciliation talks for oil storemen in Christchurch on November 19 unless oil storemen employed by Caltex Oil N.Z., Ltd, indicate by Monday that they will resume normal work. The Caltex workers struck for a week earlier this month and took two days off in two weeks in support of a claim for a house productivity agreement. When they returned to work on Tuesday they were asked to sign a letter agreeing not to take further industrial action or no work would be provided. When they refused to sign the letter they were told that

they were on strike. The Labourers’ Union, which represents the workers, maintains that they were locked out and that they have been locked out all of this week.

The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the union, Mr R. A. Lowe, said that the storemen had intended to work a full week this week because they had already had Labour Day off. Asked if they were prepared to work without imposing any restrictions, he replied that they were prepared only to consider that possibility. They would discuss the dispute at a meeting to be held on Monday.
