Teachers to decide on strike today
The national executive of the New Zealand Education Institute will decide today whether primary school teachers should strike next week.
The institute’s president, Mr D. F. Stewart, said from Wellington yesterday that he could not say what action, if any, would be taken until after the meeting.
He had received recommendations from half of the institute’s branches.
He, said, “The majority have expressed strong support for direct action but I cannot pre-empt the other branches by saying what will or will not happen next week.”
Primary school teachers threatened to strike after their- pay claim had been rejected by the Education Service Committee last week.
Mr. Stewart said he had met the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington), twice this week about the commit-
tee’s response. Mr Stewart would not say whether the meetings had lessened the likelihood of a strike, which would be the first for. the teachers.
