Lands, forests swap
Wellington reporter Steps are being taken by the Government to rationalise the land holdings of the Forest Service and Department of Lands and Survey. ' ; ' The two departments’ have been examining their respective holdings since October, 1980, and decisions have already been made to transfer various areas throughout the country. The Minister of Lands and Forests (Mr V. S. Young) said the intention was to correct a situation in which either department administered an area or areas that more effectively and efficiently
should be administered by the other. Examples were where there was an enclave of State forest within the boundaries of a major scenic reserve, or an isolated reserve in a locality served by a Forest Service headquarters. Several dozen areas, mostly relatively small, were intended for transfer one way or the other, and the exercise was almost completed, he said. A number of major areas were still under consideration and in these cases public comment was likely to be sought on the proposals.
