Protesters discharged
PA Wellington Four anti-Springbok tour protesters charged with obstructing Lower Hutt’s Ewen Bridge have been discharged without conviction in the District Court at Lower Hutt. The decision was made by Judge J. D. Bathgate after separate defended hearings for the four who were charged with obstructing the bridge during a protest on July 22. The Judge made the dis-
charges under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act after finding the charges proved. He ordered each accused to pay $2O costs. The Judge said the accused were not causing any trouble or disturbance apart from obstructing the highway. He said the protesters were all genuine and were not obstructing for the sake of it. He granted the discharges in the special circumstances.
