Last day to get on roll for election

Today is the last day that eligible voters will be able to get on the roll for next month's General Election. The rolls will close at 6 p.m. today. The returning officer for Christchurch Central. Mr I. Douglas, said yesterday that there had been a big rush of voters who had realised they had not enrolled. The rolls this year were as accurate as could be expected. People who become eligible to enrol after today, which is Writ Day, would be able to cast a special vote on polling day provided they lodged an enrolment card when they became eligible. People who became 18 on November 28. the date of the election, would not be able to vote, said Mr Douglas. Writ Day is also the day on which the Clerk of the Writs sends an official written command (a writ) to the returning officer in each of the 92 electorates ordering the election of members of Parliament.

The Clerk of the Writs is the Secretary for Internal Affairs (Mr J. N. L. Searle).

Each writ will state that nominations for candidates will close on November 5, that election day will be November 28, and that the writ must be returned to the Clerk of the Writs by December 18, showing the name of the candidate elected. The clerk then sends copies of the returned writs to the Speaker of the House of Representatives as the formal notification of the elected members.
