Widow sues sect
The widow of the saxophonist, John Coltrane, one of the key influences of modern jazz, has sued for $7.5 million against a Californian religious sect that has canonised her late husband. Alice Coltrane said the sect, the “One Mind Temple Evolutionary Transitional Church of Jesus Christ." was in breach of copyright because it used John Coltrane’s name for commercial ends. The sect's head, Ramakrishna Haqq, has said he had not thought it necessary to ask permission of the Coltrane family to use the jazzman’s name, which because of his “saintliness" was already in the public domain. John Coltrane died in 1967 at the \ age of 40.—San Francisco.
