Magistrate wins cup again
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney The veteran New Zealand stayer, Magistrate, led virtually all the way to win his second successive $30,000 Werribee Cup (2600 m at Werribee in Victoria yesterday. Ridden by the distance specialist, Bob Skelton, Magistrate, a 10-year-old aiming to win next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, hit the front soon after the start and held the lead throughout, kicking away in the home straight to cross the line two and a half lengths clear of the dour stayer, Andrias (Auguston— Honeyco). Third, only half a neck from Andrias was the Tommy Smith-trained four-year-old Blastaway (Show-down-Manque). Magistrate, a Stipulate gelding owned and trained by lan Steffert, carried topweight of 54.5 kg but comes down to 49.5 kg for the 3200 m Melbourne Cup which has never been won by a 10-year-old. Last year Magistrate won the Werribee Cup and then went on to finish fourth in the Melbourne Cup
