Superior Chance fit for Addington

Superior Chance looked and acted fit for the Mazda Handicap at Addington tomorrow with an impressive win at trials held there yesterday. The Jack Chance six-year-old was one of six horses on trial for the Addington feature tomorrow evening. False Regal (second), Quiet Win (fourth), Armalight (fifth) and Crowbar (ninth) were the others. The trainer, Bill Denton, won this race with Be Sly fresh-up last year and in Superior Chance he has the right material to-repeat. Superior Chance settled in the fourth line but when the gaps appeared over the final 200 m he dashed to a convincing lead and was untroubled to win by two lengths in 3min 29.35. False Regal, the early pacemaker fought on well for second with Mackdougal third. All eyes however, were once again on Armalight, and she lost few admirers with her effort. The mare broke at the start and was giving the field nearly 100 m before she settled.

Armalight caught the ■ bunch with 1300 m to run, and it was late in the piece before she got into the act. She rushed home late wide ■ out for her placing, running her last mile in 2min 4.85, the last 800 m in 59.8 s and the final 400 m in 29.65. Her run tomorrow evening will be a deciding factor in whether she runs at Kaikoura. Her trainer, Brent Smith, is undecided about a run in the Kaikoura Cup on Monday. If she is forward enough she may be restricted to racing at trials for her tilt at the New Zealand Cup next . month. Canterbury Park acceptors, Fouroux and Tongue Twister, fought out the finish to the C4-C5 heat. Fouroux finished best from midfield to win by a length in 3min 31.45. the last 800 m in 61.5 s and final 400 m in 30.35, but Tongue Twister was just as impressive in second placing. The Jack Chance five-year-old broke, losing 30m at the start, but he showed he was well forward to resume with a brilliant run wide out for his placing. Tongue Twister has his first start since May in the Corner Stakes, a mobile 2600 m event at Addington

tomorrow. Toshack finished well enough for third, three-quar-ters of a length back with Up Tempo, the early leader fourth and Kemra Tact fifth. Free Win. Master Will and Lil Abner, candidates for the Waikouaiti Stakes on Saturday, all showed plenty of dash yesterday. Free Win, an Out to Win colt, sat without cover, rushed to the lead 500 m out and held on strongly to beat Lil Abner by a neck in the heat for C2 pacers. Lil Abner, given the run of the race, finished on gamely to beat Travel King, a head back third, with Gay Girl storming home late for fourth. Master Will broke early in the second maiden heat and settled towards the rear of the field. He moved up to sit on the outer of the sixth line at the 1700 m, and finished impressively to get within a length of the winner, Tuapeka Idyll at the line. Tuapeka Idyll led throughout and fought off all challengers to win in 3min 32.65, the last 800 m privately timed in 59.75. Viewfield led virtually throughout and ran on strongly to win the first maiden heat by a length from the stablemates Vanda Hanover and True Dixie. Local Mist made ground well enough after an early break for fourth.

Girl Lee finished boldly from the trail to win the minor trotters’ heat going away by a neck from Sun Quest and Money Order. Money Order broke soon after the start, but showed ability above the average to finish third.

Sun Quest trialed well for the Seacliff Handicap at Waikouaiti on Saturday. Excalibur, at 14 years, showed he retains some ability from bygone years winning the main ’ heat for trotters convincingly by a length and a half from Proudfoot and Tuatahi Girl. Results;—
