Sales rise welcome
PA Wellington The Government has welcomed the rise in retail sales as a “good sign.” The August sales figures showing a 23 per cent increase in retail sales over August, 1980, showed a strong growth trend which should continue until the end of the year at least, said the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider) . ‘‘This is a good sign because it reflects a high level of' confidence among consumers and because it feeds back into the manufacturing sector. In the June, 1981,
quarter, manufacturers’ sales were up 24.3 per cent on the same quarter of the previous year. The ongoing strength of retail sales should ensure that the present satisfactory levels of production are maintained,” he said. “If we can hold this high level of domestic sales and the very good growth of exports of manufactured goods which we have enjoyed over the last year, we are . providing a firm base for increasing employment, which is one of our top priorities," Mr AdamsSchneider said.
