English election

Sir,—The move to the Centre in the English by-elec-tion 'is likely to be followed here in November. If so, Labour will form a government supported by a strong Centre party (Social Credit). To regain its standing the National Party would be faced with either retaining its leader and becoming a party of the extreme Rignt, and a puppet of multi-national companies; some of its Left-wing supporters like Marilyn Waring would then align themselves with Social Credit. The alternative would be to attempt to ditch its leader again and return to its more traditional lines. The only snag is that its present leader has taken good care that no obvious replacement for him is waiting about. Although Labour has the same separatist tendency as its. English counterpart — the militant unions — after a successful election it should stay intact till 1984.—Yours, etc., V. F. WILKINSON. ■October 25, 1981.
