Threat to Poland

Sir,—"So far, the Polish Government still consists of people who have been willing to negotiate, rather than take repressive measures, and I very much hope that continues.” Thus spoke the American Defence Secretary (Mr Weinberger) recently, commenting on the continued strikes in Poland. But what did his own Reagan Administration do, when air traffic controllers briefly struck? It swiftly sacked the workers, brought in the armed services and broke the A.T.C. union with huge fines. Was it, even for a short time, willing to “negotiate”? Or did it use "repressive measures”? By the way, what happened to that “imminent Soviet invasion of Poland”? After a year of crying wolf the United States Government now seems to be falling back on its customary hypocrisy.—Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE. October 27, 1981.
