Trials on monkeys

Sir,—With reference to the two letters “Trials on monkeys” (October 24), how many people were not moved to pity and compassion over the plight of monkeys in experimental laboratories referred to? When I read of the diabolical cruelty meted out by scientists with total dehumanisation I wonder how far we humans have come along the evolutionary scale. We speak in high terms of human dignity, but avert our delicate senses from the con-' doned “goings-on” in experimental laboratories because we are induced to believe that the “experiments” are in the name of science. The scientists do not even accord a modicum of dignity to the animals , they torture. I can no longer remain one of the silent majority. Those who consider themselves still human must stand up, speak out and show that they care before it is too late — Yours, etc., Mrs ANTOINETTE TARLTON. October 26, 1981.
