Spinks wins two judo titles
Graeme Spinks (Canterbury) was the outstanding competitor in the South Island judo championships when he won both the men’s open and 71kg divisions at St Thomas’s College, over the week-end.
But Spinks was fully extended in both events bv Mike Scott (Western Bay of Plenty). It was only in the final few seconds of each final that Spinks managed to gain an ascendancy. In the 65kg section the final was contested by two brothers, Reid and Daryll Hananeia (Southern area), with Reid coming out the winner. Sandra Manderson (Canterbury) had a double success, in the women’s open and 61kg classes. The competition ended with a touch of sadness when Mike Perkins (Central Districts) retired after an eight-year career. After finishing third in the men’s 78kg event, Perkins said that the standard was higher than in the past and that the depth of strength at club and area levels should ensure South Island exponents make their mark in national company. Quite a number of referees were upgraded. Among them were Rex May and Peter Miles (Canterbury) to national A rating, and Ken Kaanga, Perkins (Central). Rod Bailey (Christchurch) and AndrewPatterson (Southern) to national B. Abbreviations used in results are:— (Bal) Balclutha, (Caj) Can-am-ju, Christchurch; (C.D.) Central Districts, (C.C.)
