Schoolboy wins show jumping at Rangiora

Missouri, ridden by Mark Crean (Hawarden), a 17-year-old schoolboy, produced a ‘ clear round in a two-horse jump-off to win the Labour Day show jumping championship at the Rangiora Show Grounds.

The oldest and youngest riders in the class, June Cresswell (Christchurch), riding Freddy, and Crean. jumped the only clear rounds in the 12-horse class. Freddy, first to go in the jumpoff over raised fences arid against time, set a really fast time, but faulted at the last fence for four faults. Missouri, only having to jump clear to win. produced an excellent clear round, in a slower time, for a popular win. Never Know, ridden by Richard Hampton (Rakaia). which upgraded to A grade after winning the B Grade TAM 4 in the morning, and Coruba, ridden by Graeme McClintock (Cheviot) were equal third with four faults in the first round.

The pony championship saw some very exciting jumping in the four-pony jump off, where the water jump again caused the most problems. Duke, capably ridden by Patricia Spark (Rangiora), jumped the only clear round in the fastest time to win from Sir Jack, ridden by Sandra Sisson, and Cascade (Simon Pain). Thirty-five started in the novice and C grade championship, the final class of a successful show run by the Canterbury area New Zealand Horse Society junior committee. .Mr Hagen, ridden by Julie Shroy (Hinds) jumped three clear rounds to win from Jackson, ridden by Mrs Jane Knox, and Palanga (Jill Woodham). ■
