Mine fire out
After pumping in 12,000 tonnes of water into a coal mine, officials at the Hokutan Yubari Mining Company in northern Japan have said they believe a fire that has burned for 11 days has finally been put out. The bodies of 59 miners, all presumed dead, are still in the mine. The bodies of 34 others were recovered earlier. The death toll of 93 would make the Yubari tragedy Japan’s worst mining disaster in 16 years. — Tokyo.
