A $lOO,OOO project, to complete the lighting of the southern motorway and Cur-.. letts Road, may start soon if the National Roads Board acts on a recommendation by the District Roads CounThe Roads Council, at a meeting in Christchurch yesterday, decided that the area needed to be lit as soon as possible. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay) said that the lack jof lighting could cause serious problems for motorists and cyclists. Mr Hay said that he had recently found, how difficult it was drive along the
unlit area. The assistant district highways engineer, Mr A. J. Boyd, said that motorists had to drive with dipped headlights because of opposing traffic and this made it difficult to define the road ahead; Lights from streets and commercial premises, adjoining the southern motorway, also created confusion for drivers, he said. The Roads Council decided that the Roads Board needed more adequate- financing. "Financing must be on an extended and long-term basis,” said the chairman of the Waimairi County Council, Mr D. B. Rich.
