Riccarton traffic to be surveyed
Riccarton Road traffic.will be surveyed to help plan its future. The Riccarton Borough Council last evening approved a traffic survey — to cost $15,000 — to be done by Mr T. P. McCombs of Traffic Design Group, Ltd. Proposed changes to the road could cost between $2 million and $3 million, said the chairman of the council’s town-planning committee, Cr D. A. Anderson. Mr McCombs has told the council he would survey the parking and shopping habits of drivers using Riccarton Road and some nearby streets, and make recommendations on any changes to the area, including the proposed Maxwell Street extension.. The Town Clerk of Riccarton, Mr T. N. Neate, and Cr Anderson will meet Mr McCombs to discuss the survey. Slot machines The council has decided not to warn a Riccarton dairy owner against using slot machines in a room attached to his shop. The town-planning committee had recommended that the shop owner be told the use of slot machines there did not conform to the district scheme. However, the mayor of Riccarton, Mr R. W. J. Harrington, questioned whether the council had the right to stop . the. machines being used. Cr A. B. Harman said that if the council was to be consistent, it would have to tell butchers’ shops to stop selling cigarettes and garages to stop selling coat
It was .decided to consult the council’s solicitor on the matter. Mill site The site of Woods Mill, Wise Street, may be used for apartments and a theatreplayhouse. Mr C. E. Brooker, who had written to the council outlining his proposals for the site, Will be told to make a Notified - application to the town-planning committee for the apartments and theatre. Rating system -Land-value rating will remain in use in Riccarton Borough. . The council approved this finance committee recommendation after it had heard a report by council officers on differential rating. Job cards The council has decided to help the Riccarton Employment Office. Labour Department job cards, for already matched applicants,' will be available from the council’s inquiry desk during the afternoon when the office is closed. Sorting centre A centre in Addington for sorting and compacting waste paper was approved by the council. The Fletcher Development; and Construction, Ltd, facility will be built in Bernard Street where it can be serviced.by a railway siding and road transport.
