Police armed with long batons
PA Hastings Police armed with long batons, stood guard in the District Court at Hastings yesterday as two Christchurch men appeared on charges relating to a gang clash in Waipaw'a on Saturday. Large numbers of gang members had gathered outside the Court, but there was no trouble and they rode off as soon as the two men had been dealt with. Dennis Charles te Roma, aged 24, admitted throwing a Molotov cocktail, and he was fined $250. John Harry Akuhata, aged 22, admitted
possessing a similar cocktail, and he was remanded to November 10 to appear in the District Court at Hastings for sentence. Sergeant M. H. Jones said both men had been at Waipawa on Friday. The gang had been spoken to by police after a violent confrontation between two rival- gangs in Waipawa. As the other gang moved out Te Roma had thrown the cocktail over the police lines and into the roadway, Mr Jones said. No-one was hurt. Akuhata also made to throw a cocktail but was stopped, Mr Jones said.
