Appeal by M.P. over signs

The fate of warning signs erected by Woodend residents concerned about a dangerous bend ih the township could be altered by the local member of Parliament, Mr D. F. Quigley, (Nat.). Mr Quigley has asked the Ministry of Works to leave the signs up until he meets Ministry representatives on Friday. The signs were to come down yesterday but last evening they were' still nailed to the northern and southern approaches to “Butcher's Corner.” The corner is the junction of State highway 1 and Woodend Road and has been the scene of six accidents this year. A deputation of local residents asked Mr Quigley to intervene after it had heard that the Ministry would remove the signs. Mr P. W. Gregory, headmaster of the Woodend Primary School, said that traffic had slowed appreciably since the signs were erected. He said he hoped the signs would remain up during the week-end to caution the heavy traffic travelling north to the Amberley Show on Saturday. Mr Quigley also approached the Rangiora District Council and the Ministry of Transport, both of which said that they would not remove the signs.
