Dispute over painting
PA Wellington A painting by the contemporary artist Phillip Clairmont has.been withdrawn at the last minute from a big art auction at Wellington because of a dispute over ownership. A spokesman for the auctioneer, Dunbar Sloane, said that the police took possession of the work pending settlement of the dispute. The painting, which a Dunbar Sloane spokesman estimated might have realised about $3OOO, is a triptych panel in oils entitled, “Intimate Reflections — Through the Bedroom Window." The spokesman said that during the auction Clairmont disputed the vendor’s right to it. Top price at the sale was $9OOO for Petrus van der Velden’s portrait in oils of the noted ornithologist, Sir Walter Buller. This was subject to the owner’s consent. A matched pair of Frances Hodgkins’ water colours, “Portrait of a Fisherman” and “Female Portrait,” fetched $7OOO and $5OOO respectively. The National Art Gallery bought a Hodgkins pencil sketch for’ $2600. Two C. F. Goldie pencil sketches of Maoris realised $llOO and $6OO.
