Second smelter

Sir,—Developing New Zealand’s agriculture would be a much better use of our money than “think big” schemes such as a second aluminium smelter. Why make the same mistake twice? Mr Mulholland, of Federated Farmers, is correct (“The Press,” August 31) in pointing out that irrigation in Canterbury could increase our overseas earnings by $5O million a year. This is a vivid contrast with the vague promises of $lO to $2O million from a smelter.—Yours, etc., DAVE SAVILLE. August 31, 1981.
