Specialist rabbit abattoir

PA Ashburton What is thought to be the first rabbit processing abattoir in New Zealand began production on a limited scale in Ashburton yesterday. The abattoir, which was built with the assistance of regional development finance, will be able to process up to 600 rabbits a day. Until now. rabbits have been processed at chicken abattoirs. According to the manager of the Ashburton Processing Company, Ltd, Mr David Dutton, the slaughterhouse is thought to be the first specialist rabbit abattoir in New Zealand. Mr Dutton said it was based on one of a similar size in Britain, although considerable guidance was given by a local health inspector.
