Unionists to be sued
A Christchurch tanker driver who was at the centre of a dispute with the Canterbury Drivers’ Union in October last year is suing 11 union officials, union members, or former union members. In a statement of claim filed in the High Court, Patrick Martin O’Boyle seeks an injunction against the' 11 defendants that they cease to conspire against him. He also alleges that he was intimidated by all the defendants and assaulted by six of them. He seeks a total of $138,000 in damages and punitive damages.
Mr O’Boyle also seeks compensatory damages of $54.85, being the levy which he objected to last year, asserting that it had beem imposed illegally by the union. His objections to the levy at the time led to a dispute which resulted in a strike by tanker drivers who demanded that his employer, Mobil Oil New Zealand, Ltd, dismiss him. Mr O’Boyle is still employed by Mobil as a tankerdriver. Among the incidents alleged to have occurred are spitting, hosing with water, and pushing a table into Mr O’Boyle. .
