Volare has potential

Special correspondent Palmerston North The promising colt Volare looked bright when he worked at Awapuni yesterday morning and big things are expected from this newcomer to Malcolm Smith’s stable. Volare has been set for the Cambridge Breeders' Stakes at Te Rapa on Friday week following an effortless win at the Waverley trials last week. Noel Harris rode the horse on that ocassion. He was most impressed and thinks the colt has great potential. Volare strode out strongly in his 800 m task and has thrived since arriving at Awapuni. Volare won a race at Waipa last season. Later he showed his class by finishing second to Ring True in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes with Bound to Honour. Spokane and Pia Roona behind him. He was earlier trained by Ray Cleaver. Volare has since been purchased for a large sum by a client of Malcolm Smith and he will have his first start in his new colours at the Cambridge meeting. Volare ran 800 m on the course proper where the ground was good. He ran easily for a start and completed the distance in 535, the last 600 m impressively in 38s. Smith was on hand to supervise several others o' his team preparing for early spring campaigns. Rubins took the honours when running 800 m in 51s, the last 600 m in 37.6 s and he finished in front of Miss Corinda. Rubina shows promise. He was beaten in two starts last season and when resuming at New Plymouth last month but the ground was too wet for him on that occasion. Il Vento and Kashmir Boy were impressive running 800 m together in 51.25, the last 600 m in 38s. Both looked in great order and should be early winners.

Chapel's Gift ran a good trial for Wanganui on Saturday when galloping 1200 m in lmin 18.65, the last 600 m in 395. He could have done better. He ran third at Foxton and if the Wanganui track remains as good as the first day he could go close in the Sewell Handicap. Witchety and Battle Treaty completed 1600 m in lmin 525, the last 600 m in 40s. Witchety is one of five jumpers Eric Temperton has accepted with in the steeples at Wanganui. Half a Sovereign ran 1200 m in lmin 225, the last 600 m in 41s. He reverts to flat racing against the maiden stayers at Wanganui after a promising hurdles debut at Hastings.

Sencore took lmin 10.6 s for 1000 m and Hirelm worked well from the 1200 m in lmin 20.55, the final 600 m in 37.55. She is racing well and looks set for another good race at Wanganui.

Diprose and Copper Kane completed 1600 m in lmin

54.45, the last 600 m in 40s. Diprose gets another chance over steeples after a disappointing debut in the Manawatu Hunt Cup. He and Copper Kane are others in the Tally Ho Steeplechase. Royal Wink and Apparyl were timed from the 1200 m in lmin 21.45, the last 600 m in 39.45, though Apparyl only joined in from the 1000 m. Royal Wink is in the Jackson Stakes. Koiro Trelay was never at top, running 1400 m in lmin 41s, the last 600 m in 435. He came through his Wanganui race well and will have another outing in the Jackson Stakes. Gavade gained a jumping ticket with a good display over six hurdles with Paddy Waggon and Good Image jumped four stylishly. Double Bass and Oscar’s Choice schooled well over four hurdles while Achtung and Cheyenne Lad completed a grand school over the steeplechase fences, Achtung in particular being most impressive.
