Referendum on tour
Sir,—The proposal to hold a referendum at the time of the General Election, on having sporting contacts with South Africa, was another attempt to deny New Zealand sportsmen the freedom to have sporting association with whom they wish. To be honest the suggestion should, in addition to South Africa, have included other countries whose treatment of their nationals we also condemn. Signing the Gleneagles
Agreement was a mistake that should not be repeated by means of a referendum.— Yours, etc., R. V. SHAW. September 1, 1981.
