Social Credit in Canada
Sir,—As a British Columbian living in Christchurch I find Mr Beetham’s references to the Social Credit Government in B.C. misleading. The name Social Credit in B.C. is used for historical reasons only. In New Zealand the equivalent party would be the National Party. Many provincial members of Social Credit in B.C. are members of the federal Progressive Conservative Party, which is to the Right of Trudeau’s Liberal Party. The B.C. opposition New Democratic Party is the equivalent of the New Zealand Labour Party. The wealth of B.C. is attributable to vast natural resources. This wealth has largely been sold to foreign interests. And B.C. Social Credit tends to disregard environmental concerns. For example, in May of- this year, when the Government proposed a hydro-electric scheme in northern 8.C., the cost of the project was estimated at S7OOOM. The environmental impact study was budgeted to cost sBooo.—Yours, etc., KEVIN TODD. August 31, 1981.
