Welcome cancelled
PA « Napier A planned Maori welcome in Hawke’s Bay for the Springboks and the New Zealand Maoris rugby team has been cancelled.
The welcome at Waipatu rnarae, Hastings, had been called off for security reasons, said Mr Boy Tomoana, a member of the marae committee, yesterday. The decision had been a joint one by the committee and the Hawke’s Bay Maori Rugby Advisory Board. “We are completely exposed,’’ said Mr Tomoaria. “We would rather call off the welcome than have anyone hurt.”
Mr Tomoana said the marae had planned the welcome for the Maori team, and had heard through rugby channels that the Springboks were eager to take part.
