Policy on tour

Sir.—lt is New Zealand Government policy that a South African national rugby team should not tour this country. Every single member of the National Party voted in Parliament against the tour. In the light of these facts the 6000 people who marched in protest on Saturday were loyally upholding Government policy. Yet we were made to feel as though we were doing something subversive. A march that should have been in full public view was confined to back streets, confronted by police in riot gear and its leaders struck with batons. In the days that follow, thousands of people must, like me, be reflecting on the implications of Saturday’s experience.—Yours, etc., TERESA O’CONNOR. August 17, 1981.
