‘Easier access’ call
PA Wellington Trampers and walkers should not be kept out of water supply catchments on health grounds alone, says a Forestry Council report.’ The report was commenting on a study by a University of Auckland researcher. Dr Juliet Batten, on the' implications of allowing public access to water supply catchments.
Entry, conditions now range from complete prohibition to no restrictions at all, mostly dependent on w’ho owns the land.
After considering Dr Batten’s report, the Forestry Council concluded that contrary to an earlier Health Department report, there was an increasing demand for use of water supply catchments for recreation. There was no urgent need for waterbased activities, except fishing, in certain circumstances.
