Union gets offer to repair posts
The convener of the Canterbury Rugb’v Union’s grounds commitlee (Mr S. R. Williams) reported to the management committee last evening that a firm had offered to splice posts and crossbars broken bv vandals at the week-end.
Twelve uprights were either chopped or pushed over and six crossbars pulled down in South Hagley Park. Damage amounted to about $5OO. Mr Williams said that he would see if it was worthwhile having the broken posts repaired otherwise he suggested that they be replaced by new ones. He added that othergrounds had experienced similar problems.
Three orderings-off were dealt with by the judicial committee. A Suburbs president player, W. Hay. who failed to appear before the committee last Tuesday, was suspended fur three week’s and an Albion second grade plaver. B. Radford, who was sent off’for abusing the referee, was stood down until after August 22. A sixth grade New Brighton plaver was suspended until after August 15. , Some changes in the 'dates for
grade, finals were •announced. The semi-finals of the fourih ?<■ grade will be played on August- ♦' 22. the top team ’in section one meeting the second team in section two and vice versa. The final will be on August 29. Because of additions and with- > drawals in the under-20 grade, the competition will extend to j August 29. the winner being < decided on total points. The 7; .semi-finals of the under-19 grade k, will be on August 22 and the final on August 29. Referees selected to control senior matches in the 1982 season were: Messrs T. F. Doo- "I cey. A. R. A proposal from the Canterbury Supporters' Club that the club present Canterbury caps to those players having played 12 games for Canterbury A (the same requirement as for blazer awards) was accepted bv the management committee.
