Cricket storm clouds

NZPA London Fresh storm clouds have gathered over Australia's sporting and political standing with the recent disclosure that South Africa may tempt international cricketers to play in a rebel series next season.

Reports from South Africa were given credence yesterday when the controlling cricket body in England, the Test and County Cricket Board (T.C.C.8.), issued a statement which threatened to ban any English player who took part in such a series.

It is unlikely that current test players would accept, but men who are at, or nearing, the end of their playing careers, such as lan and Greg Chappell and Doug Walters, may well be approached and would be tempted to accept what would certainly be lucrative terms. Given the recent sensitivity in international circles over sporting contacts with South Africa — principally the present Springbok tour of New Zealand — the participation of any Australian passport-holder in organised sport in South Africa would bode ill for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane next vear.
