Dangerous cyclists
Sir, — We support the suggestion of M. M. G. Matson (July 31) that- the Ministry of Transport visit schools and teach pupils the road code. Motorists are required to have some sort of knowledge of the road code before they are allowed to use the road. Pedestrians and cyclists do not face this requirement. Issuing road codes with every cycle sold would be a good idea. However. the present road code, including a special publication called “Bicycle road code” does not cover requirements for cyclists at intersections which was tlje subject of previous letters to "The Press.” The Accident Compensation Commission has developed a “Be safe — be seen” campaign and this association at the recent Bicycle Association of New Zealand conference has pointed out the ambiguity and lack of regulations covering design and use of cycle lights. — Yours, etc., TIM KERR, President. Canterbury Cyclists’ Association. July 31, 1981.
