. The first railway in New Zealand was six miles of track from Christchurch to Ferrymead, finished in 1863. The lookout and flagstaff on Cave Rock, at Sumner, were used in the early days to give warning signals to ships crossing the bar with cargo for Ferrymead. Several vessels were wrecked on the bar.
