Nine killed in three days

The number of people killed on North Island roads in the last three days rose to eight yesterday and a youth fell about 30m down a cliff to his death, reports the Press Association. The dead youth was John Alexander Stevenson, aged 17, of Mission Bay, Auckland, who fell down a cliff at Taiharuru, near Whangarei, late on Saturday. A man was killed yesterday when the car in which he was a passenger struck a power pole in Birkdale, Auckland. He was Nicholas Francis Burke, aged 40, of Beachhaven, Auckland. A woman died when two cars collided head-on near Longburn, just out of Palmerston North about 6.30 z a.m. yesterday. The police have not released her name. Four people were taken to hospital. Three other road deaths in the Palmerston North area

were reported in "The Press” yesterday. A youth was killed when his motor-cycle and a car collided at an intersection of Tauranga about 4.35 p.m. on Sunday. He was Malcolm George Knaggs, aged 19. Two of the road deaths occurred in Northland and several other people involved in the accident were admitted to Whangarei Hospital. A girl died after a car driven by her mother skidded and rolled over on State highway one at Oakleigh, just south of Whangarei on Sunday night. The girl was Michelle Kohu Taua, aged nine, of Whangarei. In the other accident a man died when a car in which he was passenger failed to take a bend and rolled over on State highway 12 near Matakohe, in the Kaipara area, about 5.30 p.m. on Saturday. He was Stewart Hiki Ata, aged 57, retired, of Whakatane.
