Nuclear undertaking

PA Wellington Japan does not intend to "throw its rubbish" in someone else's garden, according to the Japanese Minister of State for Science and Technology (Mr Ichiro Nakagawa). He told journalists in Wellington after meeting NewZealand’s Minister of Science (Dr Shearer) that Japan would not dump nuclear waste at sea without consulting Pacific countries. Any dumping would comply with conditions set by the Paris-based Organisation for

Economic Co-operation and Development, he said. Mr Nakagawa said the waste was safe enough to be dumped in the middle of Tokyo Bay but international conditions set out where it must be dumped. The dumping area under consideration by the Japanese Government was 900 km from Tokyo in the Pacific, , Mr Nakagawa met the Prime Minister (Mr' Mul - doon) before calling on Dr Shearer. He left Auckland yesterday afternoon for Sydney.
