Poll for Sands seat
The British Parliament has set August 20 as the date for a by-election in Fermanagh and South Tyrone, the Northern Ireland constituency held by Bobby Sands, the first Irish Republican hunger striker to die from his fast. Sands, who died on May 5, won the seat in a byelection on April 10. Last month Parliament passed a law prohibiting jailed guerrillas from contesting elections. The measure was a direct response to Sands’s election. Republican sources say they will put up Sands’s election agent, Owen Carron, as a pro-hunger strike candidate on August 20.—London.
