Three New Zealanders, Dane and Kurt Sorensen (CronullaSutherland) and Mark Broadhurst (Manly-Warringah), had their chances of filling important roles in the Sydney rugby league championships play-offs improved when their clubs had notable wins last week-end.
Cronulla beat the premiership leader, Eastern Suburbs, to move into a clear second position. Manly has now joined Western Suburbs in equal fifth place — five teams qualify for the championship series. Results: Manly 21, South Sydney 10; Parramatta 22, Penrith 5; St George 25, Western Suburbs 8; Canterbury-Bankstown 18. Newtown 3: North Sydney 25, Balmain 15; Cronulla-Sutherland 10, Eastern Suburbs 8. Points: Easts 26. Cronulla 25. Newtown 24. Parramatta 24. Wests 19. Manly 19. Norths 16. St George 16, Penrith 14, Souths 13, Canterbury 12. Balmain 8.
