No Akaroa poll on staying in Catchment Bd

An attempt to poll Akaroa County ratepayers on whether they wanted to stay in the North Canterburv Catchment Board has failed at a meeting of the County Council.

The County Chairman. Mr T. J. Brocherie. used his casting vote to defeat the motion, put by Cr R. K. Craw.

It was decided that the council's legal adviser should discuss with the board the implications of withdrawing. Mr Brocherie said if the county withdrew it would have to replace the expertise provided by the Catchment Board. He wanted inquiries about withdrawing to be made through "the legal system."

Cr J. L. Inwood said a lot of ratepayers did not understand what services the Catchment Board provided. Legal advice read to the council suggested there was no legal provision to withdraw from the Catchment Board. Agreement for a withdrawal would be needed from the board itself.

crease its subsidy next year from 55 per cent to 57’ per cent.

It also recommended that the county spend $437,000 on roading in the next financial year. The county would contribute $lBB,OOO of this, an increase of about $lO,OOO on this year's spending. Mr Brocherie said the board had been impressed with some of the roads and the way they had been maintained.

A speeding up of the resealing of Akaroa streets and training of county staff in road patching was also suggested. Mr Brocherie said the board had indicated it would support the sealing 'of some shingle roads if it was the cheapest way of maintaining them.

Bus services The council plans to meet Railways representatives after hearing its proposal to reduce week-end bus services between Christchurch and Akaroa.

The Railways proposes to stop one return trip on Saturday and a Christchurch to Akaroa trip on Sunday because of "constant losses." That would mean that a bus would make only one return trip from Christchurch each day of the weekend. the council was told.

Council reserve

The Akaroa Bowling Club grounds have become a council reserve.

A meeting of the County Council and the Akaroa Community Council decided earlier this month to buy a section on the northern boundary of the club green. This would stop any highrise buildings being built near the grounds. In return the club agreed to transfer its land into the council's name.
