Boost for swimmers
Members of the New Zealand and Wharenui swimming teams have enjoyed strong competition at the Industry Hills carnival in California this week-end to set a host of personal best times, equal a New Zealand record and gain a number of places in finals Brett Austin, an Auckland swimmer and member of the New Zealand team, equalled the national 100 m breaststroke record with a time of Imin 7.13 s in the final. In the same final Mark Kalaugher (Auckland) was fifth in Imin 7.995. and Grant Forbes (Canterbury), a member of the Wharenui team, sixth in Imin 8.095. Forbes had had seven swims in California and has set a personal best time with each swim.
. Ursula Cross, of Auckland, won the 200 m women's final in a personal best time of 2min 22.215. Monique Rodahl was
second in 2min 22.985. Michael Davidson, the Auckland and New Zealand freestyler. improved from twenty-eighth seeding before the race on Friday. to finish sixth in Bmin 27.845. in the 800 m freestyle. On Saturday in the 400 m freestyle he cut nearly three seconds
off his previous best time, recording 4min 5.555. He is now only 5.5 s off the national record. Jennifer Queen (Wharenui) recorded Imin 1.03 s in the 100 m freestyle and 2min 10.5 s in the 200 m event. Teresa Stanley (W’harenui) returned 2min 11.5 s in the 200 m freestyle.
