Relegation for Woolston
Woolston W.M.C. is certain of relegation from the Rothmans Soccer League for the second time in four years after going down, 0-2, to Hamilton yesterday.
In theory, Woolston could survive, but for practical purposes, there is no chance of it avoiding the bottom three places. For that to happen. Manurewa must get no more than one point from its last eight matches: Gisborne
must lose all its remaining nine matches: and Takapuna City, which beat Manurewa yesterday, must get no more than two points from its last three matches.
The odds are simply too great, and Woolston can blame only itself for ’ dropping silly points earlier in the season. It will join Rangers and. probably, Ta-
kapuna, as the relegated teams. Hamilton is still not certain of retaining its place, but two points in the final two matches against Manurewa and Wellington Diamond United, will make it safe.
Hamilton largely controlled its match against Woolston, and only the efforts of Peter Moot. Woolstons goal-keeper, kept it in the game.
Mount Wellington fought back from being a goal down to beat Gisborne, 3-1, in Auckland, leaving Gisborne with just one win and five losses from its matches after the World Cup break. W'.D.U. dropped a crucial point against national Mutual Miramar, but it remains the likely winner of a tight, absorbing championship. Results:— Christchurch Mogal United 3 (David Jackson. Kees Doornenball, Pat Sharkey penalty). Dunedin City 1 (John Russell). Half-time 1-6. Mount Wellington 3 (Glen Adam. Ricki Herbert. Billy McClure). Gisborne City 1 (Peter Simonsen penalty). Half-time 2-1.
Hamilton 2 (Lawrie Fawcett. Mike Groom). Woolston W.M.C. 0. Half-time 0-0. Manurewa 0, Takapuna City 1 (Barry Weymouth). Half-time 6-1. Wellington Diamond United 2 (Garry Welch penalty. Mike Simenoff). National Mutual Miramar 2 (Shane Rufer, Brent
Pratt). Half-time 1-0. ROTHMANS LEAGUE Pt P W D L F A Mt Wgtn 2(1 12 3 5 47 13 27 W D.U. 17 10 4 3 35 12 24 Dun.
