Swimmers placed
New Zealand swimmers competing in the Santa Clara carnival in California last week-end picked up four third placings. Brett Austin (Auckland) was third in the men’s 100 m and 200 m breaststroke. His Auckland team-mate, Mark Kalaugher, was the second fastest qualifier in the 100 m breaststroke in Imin 7.35, but was not placed in the final.
The Auckland backstroke pair, Ursula Cross and Monique Rodahl, both collected bronze medals. Miss Cross was third in the 100 m backstroke in Imin 7.65, and Miss Rodahl third in the 200 m event in 2min 23.35.
Megan Tohill (Otago) was
sixth in the 200 m butterfly in 2min 21.88 s and Michael Smith (Canterbury) eighth in the men’s 200 m butterfly in 2min 8.55.
Kim Dewar (Canterbury) was eighth in the women’s 200 m breaststroke in 2min 46.65, and Grant Forbes (Canterbury) won the consolation final of the men’s 100 m breaststroke in Imin 8.855. Both were personal best times.
Smith, Forbes and Miss Dewar are members of the Wharenui team accompanying the New Zealand team. The teams will swim again at the Industry Hills carnival near Los Angeles on August 1 and 2.
