Child dies in fire

PA Gisborne ■ A girl babysitter jumped through, a window with a baby early yesterday to escape a house fire which left one child dead and another in intensive care. ' '• A boy, aged three, died in Cook Hospital, Gisborne, yesterday ‘ morning after the fire about 2 a.m. His brother, aged four, was seriously ill in the hospital’s intensivecare unit last evening. The police withheld their names because their father was in the South Island and had not been notified. A girl, aged 14, had

jumped through the front window of the house with a baby to escape the flames, the police said. The house was well alight when the fire brigade arrived. Three firemen using breathing aparatus felt their way through thick smoke to reach the two boys who were in a back bedroom. While the police took the boy who eventually died to hospital, firemen applied heart massage to the other boy until an ambulance arrived. Another adult had tried to reach the boys, but had been kept back by the flames.
