Nomads drop vital point to Western

Nomads United’s Hertz Soccer League title prospects suffered a severe blow when it was held to a 1-1 draw by Western at Tulett Park on Saturday.

The loss of that point means Cashmere-Wanderers is two points clear of Nomads, and although it has played one extra game, nas a vastly superior goal difference.

Nomads took the lead against Western through Michael Banks five minutes before half-time. However. Wavne Newsome equalised a minute later.

Western missed two great opportunities to win the match in the second half, but had Nomads made full use of its clear advantage in the opening half hour, it could have wrapped up the match.

Cashmere could not have left its run any later in beating New Brighton. 3-1, at Somerfield Park. All Cashmere’s goals came in the final eight minutes, after John Trowbridge had put Brighton ahead before half-time.

The first two goals, scored bv Angus Neave and Drew Hendrie, came after Mike O’Grady, Brighton's eoaLkeeper, had dropped the ball. The third goal, in the last minute, was a penalty by Greg Webb, after he had 'been brought down in the Brighton penalty area.

In Timaru. Nonhem Hearts hammered Timaru City. 7-0. HERTZ LEAGUE

Technical moved a step closer to winning the premier league when it beat the third-placed High School Old Boys. 2-1, on Saturday. Technical will be certain of winning the league if it beats Cashmere in its final game next week-end. Other results: Christchurch United 4, Shamrock 1; University beat Temuka by default; Western 1, Cashmere 0; Woolston 2, Rangers 0.
