Woolston and Selwyn win
Woolston and Selwyn-Hill-morton each picked up a win on Saturday at Hagley Park in the first round of the women’s Asia Pacific hockey championship.
Woolston rallied in the second half to topple Burnside, 1-0: and Selwyn-Hill-morton frustrated Carlton to win, 3:1, with consistent play. All the teams were playing without at least one of their top club members as the New Zealand national team is touring the country. ■ . The grounds at Hospital Corner were bumpy and slippery.
Results and scorers were: Selwyn-Hillmorton 3 (J. Nicholson. J. Miller. B. Mitchell), Carlton 1 (M. Shand).’ ' Woolston 1 (J. Reid), Burnside 0. Selwyri-Hilimorton v. Carlton Selwyn had the edge on field position and bail control during most of this reasonably fast match on bumpy grounds. As they have done for much of the. season, the Selwyn players
used consistency and defence to rattle their opponents. Selwyn was able to break up many of the Carlton attacks with its hardnosed defence.
Two Selwyn goals early in the first half by Jan Nicholson and June Miller took some of the spark out of the Carlton play. Mary Shand, however, scored just before half-time to give Caritori a boost. However. Selwyn came back again in the second half with a goal by Barbara Mitchell to Jock the game away. Woolston v. Burnside Although both sides had ample opportunites to score, it was Woolston's Julie Reid who knocked in the crucial goal with only minutes remaining in the game. The game was fast and wellplayed. Both teams shone in passing and teamwork. It was a good, clean match that was enjoyable to watch. The goalkeeper. Ann Jobson, had a good day for Burnside while the forward. Sally Chapman. put in nice performance for Woolston. Other scores: Harewood 4. Linwood 1; Pegasus 2, Woolston II 2: University 2, Harewood II 1; Sydenham 6. Burnside II 4.
