Armed guards for Royal Family

NZPA London The Royal Family is now being protected by a special new squad of guards armed with sub-machine-guns, the “Daily Express” has reported. It said the force had been recruited from the Royal Military Police as well as the Special Branch of Scotland Yard, and trained in close-quarter fighting by experts from the elite S.A.S., the Special Air Service. It was believed they would be on duty in addition to the normal guards, but that they would be armed with Ingram and Israeli Uzi sub-machine-guns, as well as .Browning automatic pistols. The report said that the

new squad had gained from the experience of the S.A.S. in ending the siege of the Iranian Embassy in London last year. Training for, tighter security had been started after the car bombing which killed the Conservative member of Parliament, Airey Neave, in 1979, but the new squad was actually brought into active service after .last month’s bombing of the Sullom Voe oil plant in the Shetlands while the Queen was performing the opening ceremony. According to the “Daily Express” report, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer are among those already being closely watched.
