Former clubmates will clash today

PA Masterton Two former Boroughmuir clubmates, Bruce Hay (Scotland) and Graeme -‘Bunter” Anderson (Wairarapa-Bush), will oppose each other in today’s international rugby match at Memorial ' Park, Masterton. ; The*’pair, along with the other Boroughmuir clubman in the touring side, the prop Norrie Rowan, renewed acquaintances at a Scottish training session in Masterton on Monday. Anderson, who will play at half-back' for the home side, was quick to point out that

his rationale for attending the session was purely honourable — to meet again his former clubmates of the mid-19705. It was obvious that Hay and Rowan saw nothing sinister in the presence of the man who was their clubmate during the course of-a working holiday in the British Isles. . ! ‘ Hay, who played in the torrid opening encounter against Wairarapa-Bush for the British Lions in 1977, recalled after the training session that Anderson was a popular figure in the Boroughmuir club.

In spite of this mutual respect — for 80 minutes, at least today — there will be no love lost between wing and the half-back in the opposing sides. For Wairarapa-Bush coached by the former All Black captain, Brian Lochore, has a habit of producing that little extra against touring sides, particularly in the forwards. That, undoubtedly, was one of the reasons why the Scottish coach, Jim Telfer, put his forwards through a special hour-long work-out yesterday morning, with particular emphasis on line-out drills.

Later in the day the match side trained together at Memorial Park. Last Saturday’s win by Wairarapa-Bush over Hawke’s Bay is an indication that the home team is on the boil. Referring to today’s game Mr Lochore said bluntly: “We’ll be giving it our best shot.” Ileis pleased with the way some of the younger players in the side have measured up over recent’' seasons: “The lock, Andy Earle, is still only 19 and he’s in his third year with the rep. side,” said Mr Lochore, “and the No. ; 8, : Carlor Baker, is another

young player with a future in the game.” ‘ - That is high praise.indeed from a man. who was the dominant figure at the back of the scrum on the world rugby scene during much of the 19605. - After today’s match six players in the Scottish side — the wing, Roger Baird, the fly-half, John Rutherford, the props, Gerry McGuinness and Norrie Rowan, the hooker, Ken Lawrie, and the No. 8, Derek White — will still have to play their second game in New Zealand. The match will not be an

easy assignment for the Scots, but they should win it, nevertheless. The teams are:— SCOTLAND: Andy Irvine (captain); Bruce Hay, Alastair Cranston, Steve Munro, Richard Breakey, Ron Wilson; Roy Laidlaw; lain Paxton; Gordon Dickson, Tom Smith, Bill Cuthbertson, Jim Calder; Jim Aitken, Colin Deans, lan Milne. ' WAIRARAPA-BUSH; Neil Kjestrup; Greg Karaitiana, Jimmy Cotter, Michael Cornford, Doug Bracewell (captain), Mark Bracewell; Graeme Anderson; Carlos Baker; Joe Wyeth, Michael McCool, Andy Earl, Merv Dudley; Chris Kapene, Gary McGlasban, Nigel Tatana.
