Unruly horses may be barred

PA Wellington Unruly horses sent to the outside of starting stalls may soon be a thing of the past. The executive committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference has decided to sponsor an amendment to the Rules of Racing to scratch a horse which refuses to enter the stalls at the start of a flat' or hurdle race.

The amendment will be put before the annual conference of representatives of totalisator clubs in Wellington on July 10. "Racing Conference secretary manager, Hafford Poland, said the executive committee felt when a horse started outside the stalls it lost all chance of running into a place. It considered this was not in the public interest.

Starting a horse from outside the stalls would still be permitted in a steeplechase. The committee felt as these races were over a longer distance horses had adequate opportunity to make up lost ground.
