Criticism of “Help”

Sir,—l am surprised at the vague criticism of the 1980 edition of the City Council’s excellent publication, “Help” (“The Press,” May 29). If readers are not capable of realising that the entries are in alphabetical order throughout, then an index is not going to help them. The majority will readily see that entries are usually cross-referenced and many will appreciate that the latest “Help” is a clean, clear, com- > prehensive compilation — a credit to the City Council. But how many people have “complained”? Two? Three? After a year or two on the council, one becomes, with justification, rather suspicious of these nebulous assertions, these mountains built of molehills, these armies of one or two protesters. On behalf of the hundreds of grateful users of “Help” I thank the Council and the editor, for a first-rate job. As a ratepayer, I ask the community services committee not to incur quite unnecessary expense. — Yours, etc., W. J. A. BRITTENDEN. June 2, 1981.
