Doctors’ fees

Sir,—Your article, “Doctors igree on ‘guideline’ fee” (May ■9) would surely have been nore appropriate in the Rejorter’s Diary section of the oaper. The group of doctors mentioned say that they want to introduce a standard fee to “prevent the possible overcharging of patients.” And yet the guideline fee given — with general medical services benefit subtracted — is, in the cases of adult, child and pensioner, greater than or equal to the highest figure in the range of current consultation charges. When the doctors express concern that some people are being “financially disadvantaged by the varying fees charged” are they referring to their patients or perhaps to themselves? — Yours, etc, P. C. PRIEST. May 29, 1981. . ■ ’ ■
